Welcome to the Dinka Prosody Data Collection.

Some of the Dinka speakers whose speech is included in this resource:

Acuil Malou Choth (sp.2) Albino Magol Atem (sp.5) Gum Dak Mabior (sp.7) Bol Mangong Deng (sp.9) Makol Jongkuc Athian (sp.10) Monika Adut Mol (sp.11) Elizabeth Acuil Riaar (sp12)

In its current form, the collection comprises data on the Luanyjang dialect of Dinka. These data have been elicited in the context of the Nilotic Prosody research project. This project focuses on the rich suprasegmental system of Dinka and related languages.

The 'Browse' and 'Search' buttons above take you into the dataset. As it stands, the dataset comprises 5689 utterance tokens from a total of 10 speakers. For each utterance token, you will find a description of its structure and constituents, a recording (in several sound file formats), and some acoustic representations. Most sentences are available from either 3 or from 10 different speakers. You can choose to consider the datasets on tone, quantity, or both.

Additional information relating to the dataset:

  • Table of contents - a listing of the syntactic structures and lexical items that are included.
  • Background information on Dinka, the Luanyjang dialect, and the speakers.
  • A description of the sound system of Luanyjang Dinka, including minimal sets for suprasegmental contrasts - the sound examples in the paper can be downloaded as a [compressed folder].
